The Death of bin Laden

Update [beware the internet meme] : All but the first sentence appears in King’s book Strength to Love

A friend’s Facebook status offers in reflection on bin Laden’s death a quotation which dignified the aims of this blog.

I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

— Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

For similar commentary about not returning hate with hate, see a post I wrote about Loughner’s rampage in Tucson.
